Braunlage (Harz): Cross-country skiing

Information on cross-country skiing

35.5 km Cross-country trails (in km):

There are 35.5 kilometres of cross-country ski trails around Braunlage for Nordic skiing enthusiasts. A total of six trails have been created in the forests of the beautiful Harz Nature Park at an altitude of 550 to 870 metres, which is typical for low mountain ranges. With a view of Braunlage's local mountain, the Wurmberg, and the Brocken, all cross-country skiers can enjoy themselves here - whether beginner or advanced.

The most difficult and longest course, at over 13 kilometres, is the Große Hasselkopf trail, which starts above the Schützenhaus in Braunlage and has been awarded premium trail status by the German Ski Association (DSV). At 265 metres, the Braunlage trail has the same total gradient. However, it is categorised as moderately difficult and can be used in both skating and classic style. Over a length of 8 kilometres, it runs almost entirely through the Harz National Park.

Cross-country skiers who want to do their laps in the evening after dark can do so on the floodlit, almost 2-kilometre-long skating trail at the observatory. The circuit is floodlit every day in winter from 18:00 to 20:00. Winter sports enthusiasts can also access other trails in Hohegeiß, Torfhaus, Schierke and the South Harz trail network via connecting trails from Braunlage.
