In Slovenia there are about a dozen of larger as well as countless small ski areas that operate more than 270 km of piste and over 190 lifts. The ski areas reach up to a height of 2,292 m and offer mostly easy and intermediate pistes which are best suitable for families and beginners. More experienced skiers will find a few ski routes and black pistes in the larger ski centres. Most of the ski areas a located in the lower mountain ranges of Pohorje in the East, and in the Julian Mountains in the North West. The best known ski areas are Maribor in Lower Styria and Kranjska Gora in the Gorenjska Region, and both are known as locations of the Alpine Ski World Cup.Two more known ski areas with more than 20 km of pistes are the extremly snowy ski area Vogel-Bphinj as well as Kobla-Bohinj in the Gorenjska region. In the South of the country there are very few small ski areas with a maximum of 8 km of pistes.
