East Tyrol’s main township is Matrei. Austria’s highest mountains stand in this region and provide fantastic circumstances for winter holiday. The elevation of Großglockner is 3.798 meters and the Großvenediger has an height of 3.674 meters. Taking an unhurried walk through the surrounding area or even climbing the mountains, everything is possible. Skiers and snowboarders love this region because of its direct access to the skiing area Goldried, on the Großglockner Resort Kals/Matrei. All in all this region counts about 110 km of piste, where snow cannons are available. The ski runs can reach 2.600 meters and from above the view is simply fantastic. Beside the high altitude cross-country course in Matrei, there are also great cross-country skiing trails in the surrounding localities of Virgen and Prägraten.
